First Light is a novel that keeps you reading into the wee hours of the morning. Samantha Summers hooks readers with an interesting tale and beginning to the Project Five Fifteen Series. Ronnie Rose is a formidable heroine with a stubborn streak and hopeful heart. She's the kind of girl to take responsibility after the death of her father; doing everything in her power to keep her childhood home safe and her older, more impulsive sister happy. For being the kind of girl that makes sure everyone else is content before herself, Ronnie still manages to stand up for herself and fight for what she believes in.

There's a beautiful romance in First Light that Summers highlights among mystery and danger. When at her most vulnerable, the mysterious Kalen steps in and keeps Ronnie from despair. I thought the fact that she was suspicious of Kalen was slightly unwarranted. The way she accused Kalen of knowing her father seemed like she blindly pulled it out of a hat. Once she had the answers to why Kalen mourned at her father's funeral, she moved past it and the story continued more seamlessly. Kalen divulges most of his secrets to Ronnie and they're not pretty either. Thankfully, his past and life on the run hasn't completely stripped him of the ability to love and care for someone else. Though Kalen doesn't always know how to communicate or feel emotions normally, he is perfect for Ronnie. I didn't particularly care for the flashbacks that showed glimpses of Kalen and his friends on the run. Not all of them related something that held importance to the present story, but most of the flashbacks gave a helpful background story.

Summers concludes First Light with an explosion of action, strategy, and tears. Ronnie makes a choice that will hopefully be expanded on in the next book of the series, As You Were. First Light is a wonderful introduction to Project Five Fifteen and Summers manages to keep the mystery alive through to the end of the story!

I loved Kalen (the "hero") - but Ronnie is a loser. One of those dreaming, annoying, constantly whinging, oh-pity-me, moronic and dumb girls. She even begs Kalen at one point to stay with her despite that the fact that his life was in GRAVE DANGER (won't say more as it'll give away too much)

Kalen Smith 19 yo, he's cool, dangerous, speaks loads of languages, well well-travelled and a hunk. Tall, muscular, with dark blue eyes and Brown-ish golden-ish hair, he's the silent and calm type. He can also imitate a posh English accent.

Veronica (Ronnie) Rose what a wet blanket. Shy, dreamy, very girly, silly, stupid, whinging, self-pitying, annoying, with Dark auburn hair (Kalen calls her Red) she's unfortunately the heroine of this book. I liked that she trains in kick-boxing but otherwise she's pretty much annoying.
Ronnie is a dreamer, who constantly dreams about her knight-in-shining-armour to save her. Her Prince of Darkness. Her salvation and reason for existence. No seriously - she's that much of a wet blanket.

Plot based in the small village/town Clanots Ocean it begins with Ronnie's father's funeral, where Ronnie finds a boy/young man watching her from a hill top at her father's funeral, who later turns out to be "K" aka Kalen Smith. She repeatedly bumps into him. And then begins to follow him around like a lost puppy...
However, Kalen and his band of not-so-merry-men are held with suspicion in the small village/town. They jump around buildings, drive crazy in audi's or ride motorbikes, walk on rooftops, are proficient at parkour (free running - when your feet barely touch the ground and your careening off buildings) and are generally considered "bad news" - most assume they're into drugs. My favourite is Nash and Ace. The concept behind the story is really good - but I won't say (even though it's obvious) . Unfortunately the plot isn't executed as well as it could have been due to Ronnie's character.

Romance its ok - a bit too insta-lust-love for me.

Overall enjoyable but I'm not sure if I'll continue with the series. Will see - if Ronnie's character improves it might be worth it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It really drew me in and left me wanting more. Can't wait for the second book! My usual type of book is actually non-fiction or a biography. I read First Light because of a recommendation. I did not expect it to be such a page-turner!
I like Ronnie! She's mature for her age and not annoying like lots of YA's characters. The story unfolds nicely and it's easy to read.
