I would recommend this book for pre-teens and teens, as well as older adults, but probably not for children under 10, because it might be too frightening for them. I think it's a good book, because it makes us think about the way we are destroying our environment. Reading the book, a reader might not condone everything that the Beasties do but the author still causes you to feel sympathy for them, because they are fighting for their very survival. I also like the way Doug, the main character, changes from being a rather self-centered boy at the beginning who just wants to play sports and have fun to someone willing to make a great sacrifice to help a friend. The book shows how the practice of clear-cutting forests is wasteful, and destroys a lot more trees than humans need to survive. The book also shows how some people seem to think that humans are the only species that really matters.
This is one of my sister's favorite books. She had been looking for it for years. So it made a great gift.
Bought this book for my son for a school book report. He loved it opened to the first chapter and never put it down!
I remembered this book from my childhood and finally found it again. Good for a quick read. I finished it in one sitting.

One of my favorite young adult books. Came in good condition for a low price.
I've always been a fan of William Sleator's writing but his books are not equal and this is one of his best. These beings kidnap loggers and remove some of their limbs and bring them back. They're excelent surgeons among other things. What they do to kids is "interesting" though a little less ambiguity would have been nice. The story starts when 2 kids, a brother and sister get involved with some of them.
